What I collect and why
When you send in an event. I keep the event details, your name and your email. The event details get published. Your name and email do not. I use them to confirm the listing, to ask you a question if something is unclear, and to send you the private link that lets you change or remove your event. That link is the only key. There is no account.
Your IP address. When you send in an event, your IP address is saved with it, only so that abuse of the form can be traced. Only I see it, and it is deleted after 30 days. It is not used to track you and it is not shared.
A photo of a flyer. If you scan a flyer, the photo is sent to Anthropic’s Claude, which reads it and fills in the form. Anthropic does not use it to train its models. If you send the event, I keep the photo only so I can check the listing against it. It is never published, and it is deleted once I approve or decline the event, or after 30 days. If you do not send it, the photo is not kept.
Google Analytics, since 8 September 2026. It sets cookies in your browser. It tells me which pages get read, roughly where readers are, how they found the site, and which buttons get used, like Add to calendar or Share. Google’s ad features are switched off. That is how I learn whether the site is useful. It never gets your name or email, and it never runs on the private page where you edit your event. You can turn it off with Google’s opt-out add-on or block it in your browser. Every page works the same either way.
Nothing else. There are no ad networks, social buttons, embedded players or other trackers. The site’s security settings allow Google Analytics and block every other outside script. The host, Vercel, keeps normal server logs for security.
Two things stay on your device. The town you pick, and whether you turned on the 60 km circle around it, are saved in your browser so the wall opens that way next time. They are never sent to me. Near me asks your browser where you are and sorts the towns on your own device. Nothing is sent. Adding the Slate to your home screen stores nothing new.
Event information from public sources
Most of what is here was posted somewhere public first, like a calendar or a feed. It is business contact information, such as a venue, a time or a booking line. Canadian privacy law treats that differently from personal information.
Some events are run by one person, and their name shows because their own listing had it. If that is you and you want it removed, ask. You do not need a reason.
Who it is shared with
Nobody. Your details are never sold, rented, traded or given to venues or organisers. A few services handle them so the site can work: Vercel runs the site, Neon holds the database, Resend sends the emails, Anthropic reads scanned flyers, and my own email inbox receives them. Each one gets only what it needs to work.
How long it is kept
Your contact details are kept while your event is on the site and for one year after. That way a correction can be traced back to the person who sent it.
Your rights
Under BC’s Personal Information Protection Act, you can ask what I hold about you and ask me to fix it. You can also ask me to delete it, and I will. Email hello@kootenayslate.ca. You will hear back within two working days, and anything you ask me to delete will be gone within 30 days.
If I handle something badly and cannot fix it, you can complain to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for BC.
Changes to this page
If anything changes, this page changes the same day, and so does the date at the top. It is never backdated.
